Playing BtC is simple. Login to your BtC account using the Login/Register menu item or Click on the "Coach" menu item to get started. If you don't yet have a BtC account you can register for a free account using the Login/Register menu item.
The BtC Lobby
Here you will be able to Login to your BtC account and find all available games that you can enter and play along with. Use the buttons or menu items under the "Coach" heading to access all of the scouting information and tools associated with each game - an Offensive Dashboard, a Defensive Dashboard, and a Call Sheet Template.
Live Game Interaction
To interact with a live game, select the Live Game menu item. Live game action begins when the actual game begins, ends when the live game ends, and the situations you'll be faced with are the same as those that arise in the actual game.
Gameplay begins and occurs when the actual game being simulated has started. As game situations unfold you'll see the Game Situation information update. You will notice a slight time lag between the live action taking place in the game and the information shown in the situation bar. Your play calls will be evaluated against the data present in the Game Situation bar at the time you submit your call.
The game situation is defined by score of the game, down & distance, field position and quarter. Each game situation forms the context for how your play call is evaluated. Running a Dive play into the line when its 3rd & 15 in the 4th quarter of a game you're trailing by 7 points likely won't score as well as a Pass play aimed at getting a first down in that situation.
Making a Play Call
BtC allows you to play as the Offensive Coordinator for one of the teams in the live game. For each game situation you'll make a play call using the drop down menus in the Play Call section. Time is of the essence - as soon as the game situation changes in the real game it will update in BtC (with a slight time lag), if you miss a play there's no getting it back you just move on to the next one. Remember, BtC is not a "prediction" game it is a coaching simulation game. You aren't trying to "predict" what an NFL Coach or Coordinator is going to call in a given situation, you are calling the play that you would call in their shoes. You're trying to outcoach the NFL coach, not guess what they are going to do.
Your play call will consist of four entries (see the "Glossary" menu item for a definitions of each):
Personnel
Select the type of personnel you'd employ in this situation
Run/Pass
Select whether you'd Run or Pass the ball in this situation (note selecting to Run will disable the Pass Concept and Route selections; selecting Pass will disable the Run Concept and Run Location selections)
Run/Pass Concept
If you select a Run you'll then be able to select a running concept; if you've selected a Pass you'll then be able to select a pass concept
Run Location/Route Concept
If you've selected a Run you'll be able to specify a Run Location; if you've selected a Pass you'll be able to select a Route Concept
Once you've made your play call selections click the Submit button to enter your call. The Play Call form will reload and the Score Results will update to show the score earned for that call and your total score for the game along with the Coach's scoring results. Scores update every 10 seconds so you may see a time lag between the time that you submit your play call and the time you see your score displayed.
As the situation in the live game changes, the game situation in BtC will update and you'll be faced with a new situation. Any time the Offensive Team being simulated has the ball you'll be able to make play calls. When the Offensive Team does not have the ball you'll be able to take a break, check your performance, or look at the scouting materials provided to help guide you play calling. When the Offensive Team gets the ball back you'll be back calling plays.
